Birth of a thoroughbred
The Hawk did not have a prototype as such, as all aircraft were built using production tooling - though the first 6 airframes were used by BAe for flight development trials. These airframes were allocated the UK military serials XX154, XX156-XX160 (XX155 being omitted from the listing). The first to fly was XX154 (build no.001), making the inaugural flight from BAe Dunsfold, Surrey - on the evening of 21st August 1974 around 19:20hrs. The first flight was undertaken by BAe's Chief Test Pilot, Duncan Simpson and he took the Hawk to a max speed of 325kts (602km/h) IAS and to 20,000ft (6,100m), with a total of 53 minutes flying. During the first flight the plane was flown at the approach to the stall, both clean and with the gear & flaps down. XX154 was then displayed at the 1974 SBAC Farnborough airshow, participating in the daily flight program at the show, demonstrating it's performance during it's first public appearance - quite a feat, considering that it had only been flying for 9 days ! During the initial flight trials a very few minor glitches were noted, and no major changes were found necessary to the Hawk. The following 5 airframes were also assigned to flight trials work - the first flights of the pre-production airframes were : XX156 (build no.002) - 19th May
